12 primary school teams from around Merton gathered at Wimbledon High School Playing Fields, to compete in the Y5/6 Hockey Development Festival. The event was filled with excitement, sportsmanship, and competitive spirit as young players showcased their skills on the pitch. Each team consisted of up to 10 players, with each player showing remarkable teamwork and enthusiasm throughout the event.
We were very fortunate to have the support of coaches from Wimbledon and Merton Hockey Clubs. This meant that the children could practise their skills and gain some vital coaching tips, before using these in 5 a side matches against other schools.
Prizes were handing out for outstanding performances on the day. Several players stood out for their skills and sportsmanship. Ken from Bishop Gilpin stood out in one match, scoring 10 goals!
All teams displayed great sportsmanship, respecting each other both on and off the pitch, which was great to see. The event was played out in a great atmosphere, with a sense of teamwork and friendly competition among the players, parents, and teachers who attended to support their teams.
As part of the presentation, GB Hockey star Liam Ansell was on hand to sign autographs, hand out prizes, and show the children some Hockey skills. Congratulations to Wimbledon Park Primary School who won our REFSPECT award. They received their own brand new Hockey sticks!
We would like to thank Jo, her team and Wimbledon High School for hosting us. As well as Merton and Wimbledon Hockey Clubs for their coaches and support on the day.
