Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative

A unique tennis initiative for Merton children

Free tennis coaching in Merton primary schools

The Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative is a community tennis initiative run by the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC). As part of the All England Club’s commitment to supporting their local community the Head Coach (Dan Bloxham) and his team have been offering free tennis coaching in Merton primary schools since 2002.

Introducing children to the game

Each week a different school will see their students aged from nursery upwards learning the key skills they need to play tennis. The children are not the only ones to benefit from high-quality coaching, the class teachers are shown how to deliver the sport in their school and tailor it to their pupils’ needs. Children and staff comment on how inspired they have been by the day.

Finding the next Wimbledon champion

Children are signposted to their local tennis clubs and given information about how they can continue to play outside of school. Children that display the most potential may also be invited to receive free top-class coaching at the All England Club as part of their search for the next Wimbledon champion.

Merton pupils are extremely fortunate to receive this unique opportunity. Feedback has been fantastic from children and staff and MSSP would like to thank Dan, Lizzie, the rest of the WJTI team and AELTC for their continued support.
