Merton SEND PE Network

Supporting teachers with delivering PE to children with SEND

Through the Merton School Sport Partnership, we aim to help all children to be able to reach their full potential in PE. This year we are working to connect more with schools and teachers to offer support with ideas and resources for adapting PE and delivering PE to children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

In October 2024 we lead an initial virtual introduction to share the aims of the Merton SEND PE Network as well as share a number of general resources to help practices. These slides and links are available to be shared so please let us know if you would like a copy of these.

For the network to have the most impact for 2025/26, please encourage all staff members, coaches and deliverers of PE who are working with children with SEND to get in touch with any questions, queries and best practices that are in place in your school. This will enable us to know your areas of need, to be able to share ideas with those in similar circumstances and connect one another in our Merton Schools for further support.

Do all staff in your school know how to adapt PE for all of their students’ SEND needs?

In April 2025, alongside Janna Scott from Merton Leisure department, MSSP supported pupil voice sessions in the 3 SEND schools in Merton – the feedback report and key findings can be found attached to this page. We will continue to work together with the schools to support an action plan as a result of this for 2025/26 and beyond.

Coming up in 2025/26 –

We are encouraging staff to join the Youth Sport Trust’s FREE online sessions to support your practices through INCLUSION LIVE 2028…

YST Inclusion Live 2025 – The fourth Inclusion Live week from the YOUTH SPORT TRUST took place between Monday 27 January and Friday 31 January 2025.

Each day hosted host a free online session which gives access to SEND inclusion content for all practitioners.

About Inclusion Live – Inclusion 2028 is a programme funded by the Department of Education which aims to improve the quality of schools’ physical education and school sport provision for SEND pupils working with PE leads, teachers, SENDCos and teaching assistants.

Since 2022, we have hosted Inclusion Live week. Last year, over 800 people registered for the live virtual content, which was delivered by expert practitioners and young people with a focus on best practice of the inclusion of young people with SEND in PE, school sport and physical activity. The aim of the week was to develop greater knowledge, competence and confidence to provide meaningful and inclusive opportunities for young people with SEND. You can watch last year’s sessions here.

Bookings are now open for Inclusion Live 2025. Take a look via the link for the upcoming sessions:
