The highly anticipated Y5/6 Girls Football Borough Championships kicked off on a cold and sunny day, with young footballers from various schools competing in a series of thrilling matches. The competition brought together 17 teams from Merton to showcase their football skills, teamwork, and sportsmanship. With a goal to promote physical activity and camaraderie among young athletes, the tournament provided a fun and exciting experience for all involved.
All schools showed tremendous enthusiasm and energy on the pitch. The teams were divided into 4 groups for the group stage, where they competed in round-robin style matches.
- Group A – Pelham, Bishop Gilpin, St. John Fisher. The Priory
- Group B – Poplar, St. Teresa’s, Haslemere, Dundonald
- Group C – St. Mary’s, Merton Park, Hollymount, St. Peter and Paul
- Group D – Abbotsbury, Holy Trinity, Wimbledon Chase, Joseph Hood, Lonesome
After the group stage, the top teams advanced to the knockout rounds, where the competition intensified. The matches were fast-paced and exciting, with teams pushing their limits to secure a place in the final.
- Quarter-Final: Holy Trinity won a close match against St. Mary’s, Bishop Gilpin beat Poplar, Pelham beat St. Teresa’s on penalties, while Abbotsbury defeated Merton Park
- Semi-Final: Pelham showed incredible teamwork and defeated Holy Trinity 2-0 to advance to the final. Bishop Gilpin won a penalty shootout against Abbotsbury.
Abbotsbury would go on to claim the Bronze medal, defeating Holy Trinity in the 3rd/4th place play-off.
The final match of the tournament saw Pelham and Bishop Gilpin go head-to-head in what turned out to be a match dominated by the defenders.
After an intense 8-minute match, Pelham emerged victorious on penalties. The players celebrated their hard-earned victory, and the match was a fitting end to an exciting tournament.
The Priory were crowned the REFPSECT winners., so well done to them! Congratulations to all the teams for their hard work and dedication, and we look forward to the next tournament!
