MSSP Football League 2022-23
8 schools took part in the 2022-23 edition of the MSSP Football League. There were separate Best Team and Girl’s Leagues. Each with a slightly different format but both producing some high quality Football and an exciting opportunity for primary school pupils in Merton to participate in inter-school sport.
The schools that were involved this year were Dundonald, Hatfeild, Hillcross, Hollymount, Holy Trinity, Priory, St. John Fisher and St. Marys.
Best Team
The Best Team League consisted of 7 schools split into 2 groups:
Group A – Hatfeild, Hollymount and St. John Fisher.
Group B – Dundonald, Holy Trinity, Priory and St. Mary’s.
Each team played one fixture against the other teams in the group. The venues and dates/times of the matches were organised by the PE coordinators at the relevant schools which allowed great flexibility. Schools were able to play the matches at a time when it was convenient for them.
The winners of each group would progress to a final and the runners-up in each group would qualify for the Bronze medal matches.
After the completion of the round robin fixtures and some close fought games, the schools that made it through to the final were Dundonald and Hatfeild. The Bronze medal match would be contested between Hollymount and St. Mary’s.
The final round of fixtures took place in June and July so credit to all the children who played in the warm conditions. Dundonald overcame Hatfeild in the final on July 3rd. Winning 3-0 in a match played on Hatfeild’s excellent astroturf facility.
Hollymount beat St. Mary’s 3-1 at Dundonald Recreation Ground to secure the Bronze medals in late June.
Champions: Dundonald
Girl’s League
The format of the Girl’s league was different and only involved 4 teams, but saw an incredible 31 goals scored in the 6 games played. The Girls certainly knew how to find the back of the net!
After a one-off match played between Hollymount and Hatfeild, the remainder of the games were played in one afternoon at Hillcross Primary School. A huge thank you to them for hosting the event, which saw at all 4 schools attend to play out the rest of the group matches.
After 6, high intensity 15 minute matches, Hollymount were crowned the winners, beating Hillcross into second place with Hatfeild receiving the Bronze medals.
Champions: Hollymount
2023-24 Football League
Planning is already underway for the 2023-24 season. For next season’s tournament, once we have gathered how many teams are interested, schools will be split into groups of no more than 4 based on location.
The group stages will now take place over the course of one afternoon at one host school, where teams will play round robin matches (Boys 9 a side, Girls 7 a side)
The winners from the group stages will be invited to a finals day (venue tbc) towards the end of the academic year where again, the winners from the group stages will play a round robin tournament to decide the overall winners.
If you are interested in taking part in next season’s competition, please email Fraser Addo who will coordinating the league at F.Addo@harrismorden.org.uk.
