Girls Tag Rugby Development Mega-Fest 2023

12th October 2023

The Girls Tag Rugby Development Mega Festival took place on Wednesday 10th October 2023 at the Old Wimbledonian Rugby Club, Raynes Park. Since our first girls only tag rugby festival in 2021, we have seen an encouraging interest from schools and girls keen to take part and this year was no different with 73 girls attending from 5 schools.

The day comprised of 2 halves with the morning session a rotation of mini skill games and the afternoon a set of 7 a side matches.

8 teams took part across the day with teams from Aragon, Hatfeild, Poplar, St Mary’s, Holy Trinity and three from Bishop Gilpin.

The event was wonderfully supported by 11 year 12 sports leaders from Raynes Park High School and the girls did a magnificent job of running the stations, encouraging the participants and refereeing the matches in the afternoon.

The Merton SSP staff along with Catherine Edser from the Old Wimbledonian Club were extremely impressed with the quality of rugby on display as well as the level of respect shown across the rounds off fixtures.

Schools and sports leaders nominated their REFSPECT team of the day and congratulations to St Mary’s for being voted the winners with 4 votes. Well done also the individual from Bishop Gilpin too for collecting and award for her determination and teamwork overall.

Thanks again to the Old Wimbledonian club for hosting and if any girls are interested in taking up tag rugby more regularly with the club then please do get in touch and we can connect you with Catherine at the club.
