Girls Cricket Championships 2023

29th May 2023

Our Merton Girls Cricket Championships took place on Friday 26th May 2023 at the Old Ruts Cricket Club, Merton Park.

It was wonderful to see 13 schools of up to 10 participants from each keen to take part on the day with 11 young sports leaders from Ricards Lodge doing a superb job of umpiring during the day. The girls are a credit to their school for their support and encouragement to the players throughout the games. Thank you Ricards!

The groups were split into 2 groups with round robin matches taking place over 6 mini pitches out on the fields. The groups, standings and overall positions are as follows:

Group A: Ursuline, Poplar, SS Peter and Paul, Sacred Heart, Hollymount, West Wimbledon

Hollymount 15 pts

Ursuline 9 pts

Poplar 9 pts

Sacred Heart 9 pts

SS PP 3 pts

W.Wimbledon 0 pts

Group B: Joseph Hood, Hatfeild, Wimbledon Chase, Bishop Gilpin, Garfield, Abbotsbury, Aragon

Bishop Gilpin 18 pts

Joseph Hood 15 pts

Hatfeild 9 pts

Abbotsbury 9 pts

Wimbledon Chase 9 pts

Aragon 3 pts

Garfield 0 pts

Teams progressed to a final placings match versus the team in the same positions as them from the other group with Bishop Gilpin beating Hollymount in the final by 65 runs to 45 runs. Congratulations to both teams who progress to represent Merton at the LYG and Surrey Cricket games respectively. Well done to Ursuline for picking up Bronze in their playoff versus Joseph Hood, but it was Joseph Hood who were voted our REFSPECT team of the day for their outstanding honesty, fair-play and determination for the competition.

Thanks to the Old Ruts Club for hosting and to all schools and coaches for enabling your girls to play cricket! We look forward to the development competitions coming up this term.
