Cross Country Borough Championships 2026 | Event Report

4th October 2026

On Wednesday 30th September, over 500 pupils from 26 schools in the borough participated in our annual Cross-Country Borough Championships event at Abbey and Nursery Road Recreation Grounds, South Wimbledon. It was an exciting day of competition, determination and achievement.

The event saw young athletes from Year 4 through to Year 13 take a cross-country course, with race distances ranging from 1.2km to 3.25km depending on age group. Throughout the day, pupils demonstrated outstanding effort, resilience and sportsmanship as they tackled the course and represented their schools with pride.

A fantastic atmosphere was created by the support of fellow competitors, teachers and spectators, with participants encouraging one another from start to finish. Special thanks must go to the Ursuline High School girls, who supported as Active Leaders, marshalling the primary school runs. Their enthusiasm, encouragement and support around the course helped motivate runners and contributed greatly to the success of the event.

The championships provided opportunities for pupils of all ages and abilities to challenge themselves, enjoy running and celebrate their achievements alongside their peers. There were many impressive performances across the age groups, with many medals and certificates awarded throughout the day in recognition of individual and team successes.

Bishop Gilpin Primary School were crowned winners of the Year 6 Girls’ Team Trophy, while Wimbledon Chase Primary School claimed the Year 6 Boys’ Team Trophy, following excellent performances from their runners throughout the championships.

The event was a tremendous success and showcased the passion, commitment and talent of young runners from across the borough. Congratulations to all pupils who took part and represented their schools so brilliantly, and thank you to the staff, volunteers and leaders who helped make the day such a memorable occasion.

Well done to all participants and also to those secondary school athletes qualifying for a place in the Surrey Schools Athletics Championships taking place in January 2027 – the MSSP team will be in touch directly with your school in due course to confirm invitations and arrangements once confirmed.

Thanks from all the team at Merton SSP
