Event Information
This Yr 3/4 event will run alongside the Yr 5/6 Gymnastics Development. If you plan to enter both events, please arrange at least 2 staff members to accompany your separate teams of 4 participants (4 x Yr 3/4 and 4 x Yr 5/6)
Booking
- This is a Development Competition level event.
- On the initial booking date, schools may enter either a Borough Championship or a Development Competition within each sport category.
- If an event reaches capacity, schools will be placed on a waiting list and advised accordingly. MSSP will contact schools if places become available in the lead up to the event.
Event Eligibility
- School squads should be well prepared and have time to practise with the competition rules before attending this event.
- There is also a Rise Gymnastics Borough Championships event being delivered this year.
- Please consider the most appropriate event for your pupils to attend before registering as you may only be able to take part in one event if entrees exceed capacity.
- Schools cannot select the same pupils for the Development Festival and the Borough Championships. In the instance that a Championship team player is also played in a Development Competition team, the team will not be able to progress to a medal winning position.
- If our Development events exceed their capacity for school entrees, priority will be given to schools who are not registered for the Borough Championship event.
- It is our aim to ensure all schools can access at least one of the events.

- Age: Year 3/4
- Mixed gender event
- Squad Size: 4 pupils – 2 boys & 2 girls
Kit & Equipment
- All schools MUST bring their own First Aid kit and first aid qualified member of staff.
- No jewellery may be worn by gymnasts.
- Religious bands can be worn but must be covered by a sweatband.
- Long hair must be securely tied back.
- Gymnasts have the option of wearing gymnastics grip-slippers.
- Gymnasts should be uniformly dressed in matching t-shirts and suitable gymnastics shorts or leotards.

Choreography and music are optional, however, they will not be judged – please be ready to link your device to our speaker via Bluetooth.
Format & Rules
Merton SSP will be using British Gymnastics’ Rise Gymnastics competition format for our primary school events. Rise Gymnastics Competitions demonstrate a holistic approach which rewards all participants no matter experience or ability. The format provides a range of levels and routine options choose from. Merton SSP will be using the following 3 disciplines:
- Core Skills: Floor Routine
- Large Apparatus choice of: Vault
- Working Together: Pairs
For both Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 events, gymnasts must come with a routine prepared but can choose out of Levels 1 – 4 from the RISE criteria for ‘Core Skills’ and ‘Working Together’ routines.
- For ‘Vault’ please note:
Year 3/4 – The VAULT will be positioned vertical/longways – Squat on, Tuck or Straight jump off – no half turn required.
(Year 5/6 – The VAULT will be positioned horizontal/widthways – Squat through or Straddle over.)
Upon arrival, please indicate in the registration team-sheets which level each gymnast has prepared to perform for each discipline to ensure we judge from the correct criteria sheet on their turn.

School Competition Routines Document
Awards
- Performance gold, silver or bronze certificates will be awarded to each gymnast considering their own personal score across all three disciplines.
- Gymnasts are rewarded points for each skill they perform. The positive scoring system allows gymnasts to celebrate their individual performance.
- There will be no overall team award or individual placings. For this event, each gymnast will be awarded a Personal Challenge Award Score based on the RISE points criteria collected over all 3 disciplines. Each routine will be scored out of 40 points. This will give each gymnast a total out of 120 points and will be presented with a Personal Challenge Award Score certificate.
Results
- Results and event report will be available on the news webpage within 24 hours of the event ending.
Progression Pathway
- There is no pathway progression from this event.
Staffing and Spectators
- Spectators will not be permitted entry to the school/private sports facilities. Primary schools must inform parents in advance when inviting students to take part.
- All staff attending the event must have enhanced DBS clearance and have been fully vetted by their primary school. DBS numbers, full name and school will be required in advance by the host school.
