Invasion Games | PE Development Workshop

28th September 2026

The Merton School Sport Partnership began the Inspire and Educate PE Development Workshop programme for 2026/27 on 24th September, welcoming 11 teachers, teaching assistants and support staff from schools across the borough to the AELTC Community Tennis Centre for an afternoon focused on invasion games.

The workshop was designed to help school staff build confidence and develop their PE knowledge through a mix of practical activities, discussion and shared learning. As part of MSSP’s ongoing support for schools, delegates explored simple and effective ways to plan engaging PE lessons that give every child the opportunity to be active, learn new skills and enjoy sport.

During the session, participants took part in a range of warm-ups, games and challenges linked to sports such as football, hockey, rugby and netball. The hands-on approach allowed staff to experience activities from a pupil’s perspective while picking up practical ideas and teaching strategies that they can take straight back into their own lessons.

One of the biggest benefits of the workshop was the opportunity for staff from different schools to come together, share ideas and learn from one another. Creating these professional connections is an important part of the work MSSP does to support and strengthen PE across the borough.

The event was a fantastic start to the new academic year and highlighted the value of investing in staff development. By providing regular training opportunities, MSSP continues to help schools deliver high-quality, inclusive and enjoyable PE experiences that inspire more young people to be active and develop a lifelong love of sport and physical activity.

We look forward to welcoming even more staff to future workshops throughout the year as we continue to support schools and raise the profile of PE, school sport and physical activity across Merton.
