Workshop Details 

MSSP will be running a bespoke new programme for Primary and Secondary Subject Leaders from next academic year.  The sessions will be led by leading experts in Physical Education from PE Scholar and will cover an array of topics related to the role including, curriculum and assessment, mentoring and current policy areas.  The programme will be delivered over three separate half days in each school term. This is a new and bespoke programme for Merton, and essential for anyone involved in leading, or aspiring to lead, Physical Education in their school.

Overview of the Programme

The Physical Education Subject Leader role is a complex, middle leadership role in primary and secondary schools. Subject leaders are required to navigate a number of national and local policies, alongside implementing effective curriculum and assessment, wider enrichment provision and supporting/mentoring colleagues. The Subject Leadership Programme (SLP) is a new and bespoke programme for Merton SSP, essential for anyone involved in leading, or aspiring to lead, Physical Education in their school.  The programme runs throughout the year, with a 3-hour session in each school term.

The aims of the programme are to provide subject leaders with:

  • comprehensive understanding of the subject leader role
  • awareness of current national policies and key strategies impacting upon physical education, school sport and physical activity in schools (PESSPA)
  • evidence-based practice
  • tools and processes to strategically lead physical education in school
  • ideas to help children become more active

 

The sessions will be interactive and cover a range of content including, but not limited to:

  • The subject leader role and professional standards
  • Curriculum and assessment, including support the progression of children with mild and complex learning needs
  • Mentoring and supporting colleagues
  • What’s changing in Physical Education (PE) school sport and physical activity (PA) – PESSPA – policies and national updates
  • Physical literacy
  • Physical activity across the school day
  • Subject advocacy and pupil voice

 

You will receive:

  • Tutor led sessions by nationally leading experts in the field of Physical Education
  • Resources to support ongoing professional learning and the implementation of ideas and strategies in your school
  • Networking with other subject leaders
  • A certificate of attendance (for attending all 3 sessions)

 

Other Information: 

  • Please can all attending staff bring their school Photo ID badge with them on arrival to the centre
  • Sessions may involve some element of physical active, so please wear clothing and footwear suitable for gentle physical activity. Please inform us if you are unable to participate or have any specific requirements which would support you throughout the day.  
  • Please bring a water bottle and your own food for the day.  

 

The All England Lawn Tennis Club Community Sports Ground 

The Community Sports Ground is located at 216 Grand Drive, Raynes Park, London, SW20 9NB 

When approaching the facility, please drive slowly as the entrance is slightly obscured between residential houses; keep an eye out for the AELTC gates. 

The Community Sports Ground is approximately a 15 minute walk from Raynes Park station. The 163 bus route runs between Morden Underground station (Northern Line) and Wimbledon Station (Overground, District Line, Thameslink & Tram) via Raynes Park Station (Overground). 

Car parking is available. There is also a bicycle rack for those who wish to come on two wheels; please remember to bring your own lock.
