Year 5/6 Mini Orange Tennis Borough Championships

19th April 2024

16 schools gathered at the newly refurbished AELTC Community Tennis Centre for the Year 5/6 Tennis Borough Championships.

The quality of the venue was matched by the high standard of Tennis in both the morning and afternoon. The schools were split into 4 groups of 4, with the top 2 teams in each group progressing to the knockout rounds.

Poplar, Hillcross, Bishop Gilpin Holy Trinity, St. John Fisher, Wimbledon Chase, Hollymount and Joseph Hood were the teams who would go through to the knockout stages.

Despite some closely fought matches, West Wimbledon, Pelham, Merton Park, Dundonald, Wimbledon Park, Morden, St. Mary’s and Hatfeild were eliminated at this stage. However, their teams showed great resilience to pick themselves up and compete in 3 more fixtures after lunch.

We were treated to some fantastic Tennis in the afternoon. After several tight matches and a few games being decided by the number of points gained, we were left with Hillcross and Joseph Hood in the Bronze medal match, where Joseph Hood came out on top.

Our final was contested between Poplar and Bishop Gilpin,  who had been the most consistent teams over the course of the day. In the end, it was Bishop Gilpin who came out on top and were crowned Borough Champions for 2023/24. Congratulations to them!

Holy Trinity were voted as REFSPECT winners at the tournament.

A big thank you must go to the AELTC for hosting us, and to Rutlish School for providing 10 leaders who showed great confidence and organisational skills whilst refereeing and scoring the matches.
