Our sporting competitions for schools run throughout the year, and are inclusive for all levels of ability and sporting ambition.

Through the School Games we are inspiring young people across the Borough of Merton to take part in competitive school sport. By providing different formats it makes competition more attractive and accessible for more of our young people, and ensures they can all take part in competitive sport irrespective of their experience, talent or ability. Merton SSP will enable and encourage participation in our competitions programme for all eligible school pupils through the following pathways:

Intra School

Merton SSP will support schools to provide Intra-school Competitions and Festivals (Level 1 School Games). Providing students with the opportunities to compete against other children within their own school, culminating in a School Games Day / Sports Day.

Inter School

Competitive Events

We deliver Inter-school Competitions (Level 2 School Games) where individuals and teams are selected to represent their schools against other local schools in competitions within Merton. The winning teams progressing to various regional competition opportunities including London Youth Games School Games Level 3 and Surrey Schools Athletics, Football and Cricket.

Competitive events may also be inclusive and be organised specifically for children with SEND. These events will also follow a pathway into Regional Finals such as London Youth Games/School Games.

Festivals

Festival events are an inclusive non-competitive series of organised friendly matches, fun games or skill based activities with no scores collected. These may be specifically for children with SEND or for certain age groups.

Inclusive events are generally aimed at your SEND children and/or those children who might not normally get to represent the school in competitive events.

MSSP Events

In 2022/23, we had 9,407 participants taking part in 74 Primary School Games Competitions and festivals, including 14 new Development events. This made up 919 teams from 45 schools who competed against each other to represent their school throughout the academic year. As well as this, over 40 Secondary School competitions and festivals took place across the borough between our 12 schools.
