The Wimbledon Cluster Year 5/6 Tag Rugby competition kicked off at Dundonald Recreation Ground on Wednesday 5th February 2020. It was fantastic to see so many schools represented and 17 teams in total battling it out to represent Wimbledon at the borough finals. Teams were drawn into four groups with the top two teams progressing into the top eight knockout rounds while the third and fourth placed teams looked to finish as high as possible in their respective knockout rounds.

In Group 1 BG A ran away with the group with two convincing wins, although Pelham A made it hard for them, but ultimately succumbed to a loss. St Mary’s enjoyed a TRY-fest of Holy Trinity during a big win versus Holy Trinity B. Holy Trinity lost all their games, however conceded a try less each game that went past to show improvements were happening. Pelham claimed a tense 3-2 win over St Mary’s that came down to the final minute of the game in which Pelham sneaked into the corner to score the game winning try. That left the Group 1 Final Standings as follows:

The quality of rugby on display was evident from the first match in Group 2 as Wimbledon Chase came flying out and their quick defensive line caused errors amongst the BG C players to claim two tries from handling errors, efficient stuff! BG C however recovered from their opening loss to control the 3-1 win against All Saints A and a credible draw against a stubborn Dundonald B defence. One of the games of the day was the tussle between All Saints A and Dundonald B in which it was 2-2 but full of great tagging from both teams to stop each team from claiming the win from each other. Group 3 had a mixture of close games but also big wins for certain teams. Dundonald A (who didn’t have far to travel at all) were in fine form to win all their games, including a brilliant performance against a strong Wimbledon Park A outfit, they didn’t give them many chances, and the attacking play was sublime from the boys and girls of Dundonald A. Wimbledon Park were unusually off form today, not helped by some controversial decisions which went against them in the vital moments of two of their games but stuck to the task to get as high up the table as possible. Wimbledon Chase B team didn’t want to be outdone by their ‘A’ team and put on some scintillating performances to beat Holy Trinity and Wimbledon Park! Group 3 Final standings are as followed:

Group 4 was the most entertaining of the morning rounds, the most tries of all the groups and brilliant passing between the teams and some silky footwork when in try-scoring moments. Garfield were in the mood today as last year their children were unable to make the competition, and they certainly showed their hunger by staying undefeated during the group stages to finish top of the group. Wimbledon Park A were on course to finish top, but the grudge match against Garfield went against them by just one try to ultimately finish 2nd in the group.  All Saints B and Pelham B played out a defensive game on both sides, but a fantastic solo try from a young lady on the All Saints team, stole the 1-0 win.

The afternoon was for the knockout stages, teams fighting to finish 1st-8th and 9th-17th.

There was a lot of dramatic finishes to many of these games, including All Saints ‘B’ who scored a wonderful try during extra-time to win the game after running from her own try line, and dodged 3 or 4 tackles to secure a try at the other end. The rivalry of BG A v BG C was extremely close, it was obvious the teams didn’t want to lose to each other or make it easy for one another. However, BG A claimed a tight 1-0 win to send them through as the highest seed again. 3rd & 4th finished 3-2 to Dundonald who beat Garfield to claim bronze, a close game, that neither team deserved to lose but Dundonald pipped them to the post. The final between BG A & Wimbledon Chase A may have finished 3-0 to Bishop Gilpin, however Wimbledon Chase did see a lot of the ball, they couldn’t get past a very organised BG defence, who themselves countered quickly numerous times to break Chase’s hearts.

Congratulations to all teams who took part and fully embodied the rugby core values of respect, discipline, sportsmanship, enjoyment and fair play – all of these were on display throughout the afternoon. We wish Bishop Gilpin, Wimbledon Chase, Dundonald and Garfield the very best of luck in the Borough Finals where they will represent the Wimbledon Cluster. Congratulations to Wimbledon Park who were the winners of the REFSPECT award today, they respected the referee’s decisions every game even if decisions went against them, they also played with high energy and wanted to enjoy themselves whoever they came up against, excellent spirit from you boys and girls at Wimbledon Park!!

The event could not have run so smoothly if it were not for the officials – Sports Leaders from Rutlish School – who refereed the games with composure, patience and calm authority. A huge thank you must be extended to the members of staff and parents who trained, supported and cheered their teams in preparation for, and during, the event.
